Homework 12-14-15

There will not be a spelling test this week, so no spelling homework!

Hour of Code/Chromebooks

Happy Friday! Hopefully your child came home excited today with news that third grade has finally received their chromebooks! We are sharing them amongst all the third grade classes, but we have enough that we are able to use them about three times a week. I am very excited about the engagement that chrome books bring into the classroom. In fact, this week was National Hour of Code week and your child was actually able to do some coding today! This is such a great opportunity to get them exposed to this technology and get them interested in the types of jobs that are, and will be, available for them in the future.

Also, thank you very much to everyone that helped with the supplies. I am truly grateful and I can't wait for you to see what we are making next week!

You can see the hour of code info here:  Hour of Code

Homework and Announcement!

Hello! The holidays are getting closer! With that in mind, I have a couple art activities/events that I would like to do in class and it would be awesome if I could get some help with the supplies. If you are interested in helping out, please just contact me and I would GREATLY appreciate it. I don't want to put a list here in fear that someone will buy supplies when someone else has already purchased them. One of the activities we are doing is a "Christmas Around the World" rotation. The students will rotate to different third grade teachers throughout the day and learn about how different countries celebrate Christmas and do a small activity/craft to go along with it. I have done it for 3 years now and the kids really enjoy it! If you do not wish your child to participate in any of these activities because of personal beliefs, please let me know and I will have something else for them to do.

Also, some students still seem to be having a difficult time with subtracting with regrouping. It is a very difficult concept to understand! Therefore, I have been reteaching daily! This is the "old-school" algorithm that we are all so familiar with, so it makes sense to us, but not so much our kids! :) For homework tonight, students were to take home their graded Math Classwork and fix their incorrect answers so they could improve their grade.

We have also been talking a lot about grades in class and what a percent/letter grade actually means. Seeing as how our third graders haven't learned percents and have never been exposed to letter grades, this is also a new concept! I have been explaining what each grade means and letting them know that they have the opportunity to improve that grade by working hard and fixing their mistakes. After all, the goal for them is to learn the concept, so if they are putting in the extra effort to fix their errors, they are learning, and therefore, deserve an improvement in their grade. :)
****I also want to make it clear that I often allow students to fix their work and resubmit for a better grade, so if you see work coming home that is not "up to par", this may be an option, just ask me just to be sure. :)

Homework- 1) fix math mistakes on worksheets
                    2) reading for 20 minutes

As always thank you, thank you, thank you, for being such amazing and supportive parents!

Homework 12/2/15

Hello! The homework tonight is:
Reading 20 minutes
Prodigy Math ( https://prodigygame.com/Play/ )
If your child did not finish their opinion writing we did together as a class, then I have posted it below so they can finish it. We did the entire thing together, your child just needs to complete two sentences (reds/explanations) that further support the yellow sentence that states that they wouldn't want to go on the Mayflower because it was dangerous (see the paragraph below).
***I have sent home some supplemental math worksheets to some students that wanted the extra practice. Since it is a district-wide policy that we can't send home math homework, if you would like to get some extra practice for your child, feel free to ask and I can send it home, but it is not required. :)

PS - if you click on the picture below, it will enlarge. :)

Happy Thanksgiving and Quick Announcement!

First of all, Happy early Thanksgiving! I hope you and your family enjoy this time together to celebrate the many things we have to be thankful for. I am truly thankful to have your child in my class!

Second, I wanted to give you a copy of the math assessment we will be taking the first week we come back from break. We have been practicing all of these concepts, but I think students could use a little extra practice over the break, specifically in rounding to the tens and hundreds. Rounding is a very abstract and difficult concept to understand, so any extra practice will help. So if your child REALLY misses school ( :) )  and they would like to take a look ahead and practice some of these skills, I think they would really benefit for the test. **** This is not required and nothing will be turned in, but I want to give those that want the practice, a chance to do so. They can also go onto Prodigy to practice their math skills.

Lastly, progress reports will be coming out again very shortly after we return from Thanksgiving break. I encourage you to take a look at your child's grades. If you are unsure how to do this, I posted directions in my previous post. You are welcome to reach out to me during the break if you have questions. Remember, that this is the first year they will be receiving letter grades, so I have been discussing with students what a letter grade actually means (since they have not familiar with fractions or percents, which directly correlate with letter grades!). Again, please feel free to contact me with any questions!

How Do I Check My Child's Grades?

Hi there! I sent out a text today about checking your child's grades in the gradebook and I got some questions about how to do that. Well, here you go!

1) You should have received an access code from the office when your child first started here. If you don't remember it or you didn't receive it, you can contact the office to get it. Unfortunately, they will not give me that information and you have to physically come to the office to get the code because they will ask for ID.
2) Once you get the code, you can go to https://menifee.illuminatehc.com/login and click on the green "create account" option.
3) Once you do that, you will put in your information along with the access code and create a password.
4) Now you can always access your child's grades!
Pretty cool, right? I also sent home a TON of graded work today, so you can see how they have been doing on certain assignments.

Homework 11/19/15

Hello! The homework tonight is Thursday night's spelling homework to prepare for our spelling test tomorrow. The students should also read for 20 minutes and they may go on Prodigy if they want! Every student has set up an account because we did it in the computer lab today, so if they do not know their username or password to log in, please contact me so I can get it for you! Also, if your child did not finish their "Life Cycle of an Eel" text dependent questions that we did in class, those will be coming home so they can complete them and turn them in tomorrow.

Thank you!

Homework and Quick Announcement

Hello wonderful 3rd grade parents! First off, the homework is listed below:
1) read 20 minutes
2) Prodigy Math Game (not required, but encouraged)
3) Spelling Homework for Tuesday night. All students have the same words this week because past and present tense is an important concept for all! The words are listed below.
4) If your child did not finish their classwork summary, I have attached my copy below. They may copy mine (since we did it together) and submit it to me tomorrow.

Announcement: Today, our class talked about having an emotional bank account and what that means. We talked about making deposits into our emotional bank accounts and withdrawals and examples of each of those. It is a part of the Leader in Me process that our school has adopted, so I encourage you to ask your child about this! We had some great conversations in class about how we feel when we make deposits into our own, or another person's emotional bank account! :)

Word Sort (everyone has the same one this week) :

Homework 11/5/15

Happy Thursday! Today's homework is reading and spelling. There is a spelling test tomorrow! Students are also welcome to try the Prodigy game that I posted about last night. (directions to log in are in previous post). Students that finished their ELA test today in the computer lab were able to create a username or password. If your child isn't able to log in, text me on the Remind App and I can give you that information. If your child didn't get a chance to login to the prodigy website today, there are directions on how to do so in my previous post. I have heard really good things about this website, so I am excited to get feedback from you and your child! Please keep in mind that it does start VERY easy and then works through third grade common core standards. As they master certain concepts, they will move onto more complex concepts that meet third grade common core math standards. If you have any questions on this, please feel free to ask! :)

New Math Game!

I have heard a buzz going around about this math game and wanted to see if it would help get your child get excited about math! This is not a requirement, but I have heard students from other classes obsess over this game, so give it a try! :) **PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS GAME STARTS VERY EASY, AND THEN PROGRESSES AS THE STUDENTS MASTER EACH PORTION. This is good because it can fill in the gaps of missing knowledge that students need in third grade. Here are the directions to log in below:
