Tomorrow is PJ Day and Board Game Day, so please have your child wear PJ's (if they want) and bring their favorite school appropriate board game to play in the afternoon. :)

Tomorrow, June 3rd: Movie + Popcorn Day

Tomorrow is Movie and Popcorn Day! After lunch, we will be watching Desperaux, a novel that our class has been reading the last couple weeks. I will provide popcorn, but if your child would like to bring in popcorn or something to drink, they can. I will be "selling" snacks, so they can use their tickets they have earned this year to buy a treat. They can wear their regular clothes, as PJ and Board Game day isn't until next week on June 7th. :)

Homework 5-31- THE END OF THE YEAR! :)

Happy Tuesday! We are coming into the last few days of school! I can't believe it! I am so proud of each and every one of my students. The homework for the rest of the year will include reading nightly. I would definitely recommend going on Dreambox and practicing math facts nightly, but reading is top priority!

Report cards will go home on the last day of school, June 8th. Inside the envelope, I will enclose login information for both Raz-Kids and Dreambox so that your child can practice over the break. I highly recommend having them consistently login over summer to keep their skills sharp! :)

Tomorrow is our field day, so please see my note that went home last week to ensure that your child is ready and dressed accordingly. If you are interested in helping out by bringing Big Stick Popsicles, please let me know so that I know how many I need to purchase myself. If you are able to donate popsicles, please send them to school with your child tomorrow. Lastly, your child may bring a towel for tomorrow. They will not be getting wet, but then they can use it to take a seat on the field if they would like. If you have any questions, please let me know!

We are approaching the end of the school year! We have a couple things planned and one of them is a Third Grade Field Day. We will have field games from 8am-11am on Wednesday, June 1st.

I am only taking 2 because we will be out on the field with the other 3rd grade classes and I want to give the parents in those classes a chance  to volunteer, as well. I sent home a practice test for fractions. We have already taken the mid-module test previously, but this is for the whole fraction unit test. Please have your child ATTEMPT these at home tonight for homework. If they don't understand a question, please have them circle it and we will review the whole test tomorrow in class. Then, they can take their completed (and corrected) practice test tomorrow night to be ready for the test Friday. This is NOT graded, but will definitely help them prepare for the test.

Parents: I sent home a math practice test today for area. These are concepts we have been working on for the last few weeks, but it is a difficult test. My goal is that students will complete this tonight, so that we can review it tomorrow as a class and review any misconceptions. Then, the math test will be Friday. The practice test I sent home is very similar to the math test! The only difference is that it will have different numbers. The last time I sent home a math practice test, students were much more successful on the exam, so I hope this will help! Please don't hesitate to ask if you have questions!

The homework tonight is for students to finish their math worksheet we started in class. Number 4 and 5 on the back (as shown below) were sent home for homework. Let me know if you have any questions on this!

On Horse Farmer - we have been working on "speaker tags" in class and using context clues from the text to help us decide on an appropriate speaker tag. For example, if someone is showing excitement, there are certain speaker tags that we would use versus someone that is showing they are sad.

Example: "Suzy, I am so excited I get to go to Disneyland for my birthday!", exclaimed Josie.

In this case, exclaimed would be the speaker tag. Students are to choose appropriate speaker tags for each blank and submit it tomorrow. :)

Also, two papers went home today in your child's homework folder. The first one is an announcement about Family Science Night (should be very fun!) and the other is about spring pictures!

Hello! Sorry this post is going up later than usual! I had some meetings after school!

If you have some extra headphones or earbuds that your child can use for school, please have them bring them in. They will keep them in their desk, so they will be the only ones using them. Just old iPhone earbuds are perfect if you have an extra pair lying around! :)

Progress reports came home today, so please be on the lookout for those. If you could detach the bottom portion of the progress report, sign it, and send it back, that would be great. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

The math mid-module test scores went home yesterday, as well. This was the fractions test that was taken last Friday.

Your child came home today with a letter stapled to a 3x5 card. The 3x5 card contains your child's username and password to access the website, so please keep this 3x5 card in a safe place. There is a copy of the letter below. This letter is from Dreambox, a mathematical program designed to provide students with a fun way to practice their math skills. The program is leveled, so it will adjust to your child's needs and become increasingly more difficult as they master concepts. The program is designed to "fill the gaps" in your child's math, while encouraging them to expand their current math knowledge. We tried it in class today and the students were very engaged, so I hope they enjoy using it at home.

Text me on Remind if you have any problems with their login. Keep in mind it is case sensitive, so make sure everything is in lowercase letters. Also, please keep in mind that you cannot simply do a google search for "dreambox". It will not allow you to login. You must type in the url below to access the site. I have also posted the url on the website in the upper right hand corner under "academic resources". :)

Lastly, it was a pleasure seeing many of you at the Book Fair today! I hope your child found some gems. In case your child was not able to purchase anything today, the Book Fair will be open all week and students can go during lunch and/or after school with a parent.

Hello! The homework tonight is just reading for ATLEAST 20 minutes.

It's that time of the year again! Storm Reading! This means that Storm Baseball is offering students free Storm tickets to those that finish books. Every 5 chapters counts as one book for my students. So please keep that Storm booklet and sign when your child has completed every 5 chapters. Therefore, he/she needs to read 50 chapters in a grade level appropriate book by March 24th in order to get the tickets. Please turn in the back portion of the booklet with the books/chapters they read and your signature no later than that date.

Valentine's Day!!!!!!

Happy Friday! I sent home a letter today explaining the plan for our Valentine's Day celebration. In the morning, we will have a "healthy breakfast" while we decorate our Valentine mailboxes. Please see the form that was sent home and if you are able to send in something for our breakfast, please detach the bottom portion and return it to school. Unfortunately, we can't have any homemade goodies. They must be store bought for allergen reasons.

Also, please help your child find a shoebox and help them cut a hole in the top of the shoebox because this will serve as their "mailbox" for their Valentine's. We will decorate those boxes in class on Thursday while we eat our breakfast. If you would like to send your child to school with Valentine's, that would be fun! Announcement- With the Week of Kindness, I have been presented with a service learning project that I would like our class to participate in. Our class watched a video today about the Coins for Kenya Project and our class decided that we would like to help by donating coins to this group of students in Kenya. Our class had a rich discussion about how different our lives are from those students and how fortunate we are. It really put into perspective how lucky we all are! We talked about how sometimes we take everyday essentials for granted such as running water, food, school supplies, etc. and the importance of helping others in times of need. Therefore, if you would like to donate coins, please have your child bring them to school so we can fill our jar! :)

We are working on time this week and will continue working on elapsed time during the rest of the year, so please ask your child questions regarding time to get them even more exposure! I noticed some students are having trouble with telling time with an analog clock (which makes sense because we all use our phones with digital to tell time!). But if you have an analog clock at home, ask questions about the time so they can get used to it! :)

Example: "Baseball practice was one hour and 30 minutes and it started at 4. What time was it over?"

Those types of questions will really help them!

Kindness Week!

This week Oak Meadows and schools across the country are participating in the Great Kindness Challenge! This is one of my favorite school weeks of the year because we get to see how sweet and kind our students can be toward one another! It truly is an amazing thing to see the acts of kindness and the feeling that it gives both students! We will be focusing on random acts of kindness that students and staff can do to make the world a better place. This will be a huge topic of discussion this week, so I am eager to see what random acts of kindness our students come up with! Below is a list that can give students an idea of how they can participate.

Google Classroom!

Hi everyone! Happy Friday! I wanted to share with you some things that we have been doing using the technology we now have available to us. We are now using Google Classroom to post (some) assignments and the students are loving it! If you would like to take a peek at some of the things that students are doing in class, you can have your child log into their google classroom from home. Here are the steps to do so:
1. Go to classroom.google.com
2. Log in using Firstname.lastinitial.lastfourdigitsofstudentID@menifeeusd.org and their password is musduser1.
3. Click on Ms. Hill's Third Grade and you have entered the classroom.
4. Take a peek around. I am sure your child will show you what we have been up to!

1/14/16 Homework

Also, we are really focused on multiplication and division right now, so it would be amazing if you could randomly quiz your child on their math multiplication facts to improve their fluency (in the car on the way to school, at the dinner table, etc,)! Also, I completely forgot to tell students to work on their Tuesday night spelling homework. The nightly spelling homework is listed to the right of this post. The word lists are as follows:

Group 1: Word sort listed here:

 

Group 2:  Do NOT have to sort the words. They can, but I don't find it extremely necessary for this word sort. The focus is compound words. If they do sort it, they just need to be sorted by the first word within the compound word. For example, bookcase would go with bookmark, etc.

I can't believe it is 2016! I enjoyed having your child back in class today and we hit the ground running! The homework tonight is:

Report cards come out in about 2 weeks, so if you haven't already, please review your child's progress report that was sent home before Christmas break and let me know if you have any questions! Also, please detach the bottom portion, sign it and send it back to school with your child.
